A metal free crown or bridge is the ideal treatment to help restore, rejuvenate and repair your smile
What are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns repair damaged teeth and are a tooth-like cap that is used to cover an existing tooth to restore its function and aesthetic. The Crown is cemented into position and covers the entire portion of the tooth that is visible above the gum line.
It is typically recommended as a viable treatment option for protecting a badly damaged or decayed tooth. The dentist may suggest the Dental Crown if your tooth has lost too much structure such that a regular filling does not provide the required strength and protection. The Dental Crown does not only help to protect the tooth from further disruption and deterioration, it also preserves its structural integrity.
What materials are used?
Dental crowns are an ideal treatment for restoring form and function to a damaged or weak tooth. They also have the added bonus of improving the appearance of your smile.
When it comes to the materials that crowns are made of, the options, include zirconia ceramic, porcelain and metal. Each have there indications and we can advise your best option at the initial consultation.
At Excellence in Dentistry we offer CEREC or lab made zirconia or porcelain crowns.
What are Porcelain Crowns ?
Porcelain crowns are very durable and can last for many years; however, like most other types of dental crown restorations, keep in mind that they may eventually need to be replaced.
Porcelain Crown Procedures
These can also be made by CEREC or are sent to the lab.
For lab made crowns, you will require two separate appointments at our dental clinic
- The first crown appointment is to prepare your teeth to the standards required for accurately fitting a crown to the tooth where a temporary crown will be fitted.
- At your second appointment, about two or three weeks after your first one giving the laboratory time to create your crown, the temporary crown is removed, the tooth meticulously cleaned, and your new porcelain cap /crown will be carefully bonded to your tooth
Zirconia Crowns Vs Porcelain Crowns
As with many dentistry procedures, there are options, and some will be better suited than others for your particular dental restoration.
- Zirconia offers metal-like strength necessary for restorations. Crowns and bridges made from this all-ceramic material provide real teeth like texture and colouring. The main drawback is the slightly less ability for colour customization.
- Porcelain crowns can be a great choice for highly aesthetic areas as the colour match variation is exceptional. They are proven, durable and translucent, sometimes there is the need for an additional zirconia frame to support them. These may not be suited to those who grind their teeth.

What are dental Bridges?
A dental bridge permanently replaces missing teeth with false teeth. The bridge is attached to the teeth on either side of the gap. Bridges are usually made of zirconia porcelain or a mix of zirconia and porcelain. Occasionally they may be a mix of metal and procelain. They are fixed in place and, for some people, are an alternative to dentures.
Who should consider and bridge?
This dental restoration procedure is an alternative option to replace a missing tooth or teeth when a patient is not a suitable candidate for either a surgical implant.
The advantage of a bridge is that it is cemented in place and does not need to be removed. During the treatment, the teeth on each side are prepared to allow for the fitting of the bridge.
What are the advantages and risks of a dental bridge procedure?
Dental bridges can help restore the smile and avoid someone feeling self-conscious about having missing teeth. Filling in the gap left by missing teeth is also important because, if the gap is not filled, the surrounding teeth might lean into the gap over time and change the way a person bites.
How long does it take for a dental bridge.
Like ceramic crowns, with our advanced CEREC technology, we make Zirconia bridges in our Brisbane dental clinic usually in 2- 3 days. However if the extension of the tooth decay or fracture is advanced or gone under the gumline then we may need to send to the lab for fabrication and this will take longer.
