Can You Handle The Tooth?

You can't handle the tooth

What’s going on inside each one of your teeth may surprise you

Every one of your teeth has a complex set of parts that all work together to enable you to chew, speak and smile, as well as to define the shape of the face and jaw. Did you know:

A single tooth is made up of at least eight different elements

These different parts of each tooth include:

  1. Dentin
  2. Cementum
  3. Enamel
  4. Dental nerves
  5. Periodontal membrane
  6. Pulp
  7. Crown
  8. Root

Each of these parts work together to enable you to speak, chew and smile.

Your tooth’s enamel is the hardest part of your entire body

The tooth’s enamel is the white, out layer of the tooth’s crown. The enamel acts as an extremely hard, nonporous cap which slips over the dentin. Enamel even tops your bone in strength; it is the hardest substance in the body and is comprised nearly completely of hydroxyapatite.

Teeth are classified into four major groups: incisors, canine, premolars, and molars

In order to absorb the nutrients we need from food, humans have four different types of teeth. Incisors, canine, premolars, and molars each play a different role in the chewing process, enabling you to digest a variety of foods.

No two people have the same set of teeth

Your teeth are as unique as your fingerprint’s and can be used to identify you. Just like each fingerprint has a different composition, so do your teeth.

Your mouth produces over 23658 litres of saliva throughout your lifetime

That amount is enough to fill two swimming pools. The production of saliva protects your teeth from the bacteria in your mouth that can cause cavities in the teeth.
