Look After Those Pearly Whites For More Than One Reason

mother and daughter outdoorA recent study has found significant links to the condition of oral health and the condition of the brain. The study, undertaken at the University of California, followed over 5,500 elderly people over a period of 18 years. The results speak for themselves, where those who had poor oral hygiene (brushed less than once a day) were 65% more likely to develop Dementia compared to those who kept optimal oral health.

Dementia is not the only condition linked to poor oral health

It has also been found, through a similar study, that periodontal disease-related bacteria were more prominent in patients who had Alzheimer’s disease, the most common type of Dementia, than those who did not have Alzheimer’s.

Other links have been found where poor oral health has led to higher risk of stroke, heart disease and diabetes!

That is why we at Excellence in Dentistry in Brisbane believe in prevention

Oral health prevention is the key. To help you in home preventative care, we have a few staple rules you should stick to so you can enjoy better oral health:

  • Make sure you floss at least once a day, this will help keep plaque at bay
  • Make sure to brush at least twice daily, while holding the brush at a 45 degree angle. This ensures both the teeth and the gums get an even clean.
  • See an oral health care profession at six month intervals, this will aid in picking up any issues early, so any necessary treatment is not as painful or extensive.
