Although permanent teeth were meant to last a lifetime, there are a number of reasons why tooth extraction may be needed.
Although permanent teeth were meant to last a lifetime, there are a number of reasons why tooth extraction may be needed for the sake of best oral health. Extensive decay, severe gum disease, infection and an irreparable fracture are some of the reasons an extraction may be needed.
We make sure every alternative to save the tooth has been explored before we make a decision to remove a tooth.
Some teeth can be simply removed under local anaesthesia in the chair, while impacted, badly broken teeth or teeth with fused roots to bone will often require a minor surgical procedure.
Once the tooth is removed, your dentist will advise you on your options for a suitable replacement, to prevent your nearby teeth from moving out of alignment and bone loss.
Other minor oral surgeries we offer are soft tissue surgery and oral surgery related to orthodontic treatments.
Wisdom teeth or third molars usually do not push through the gums until people are in their late teens, even older. Most people have four wisdom teeth. If the jaw does not have enough space for the wisdom tooth to come through, the tooth becomes wedged in or “impacted”. Some impacted wisdom teeth may cause severe problems, hence they should be removed as soon as possible.
Problems caused by impacted wisdom teeth:
- Food trap
- Resorption cavity
In most extraction cases, an x-ray is needed to help us plan the best way to remove troublesome teeth/wisdom teeth. The removal of teeth can be performed under local anaesthesia, IV Sedation or general anaesthesia. These options, as well as the possible surgical risks, will be discussed with you before the procedure is performed.
