Excellence in Dentistry Now Offers High Resolution 3D Imaging

What Is a Cone Beam CT Scan (CBCT)?

If you’ve recently been to the dentist and were asked if you would consider having a cone-beam CT scan (CBCT) done, you might be wondering why the regular x-rays you have had done aren’t good enough?

Whilst the CBCT might sound serious and a little overwhelming, the cone-shaped x-ray beam takes multiple images at basically every angle around the patient’s mouth and then transfers these high-quality images into software where our dentists can have a perfect view of your mouth, teeth and their surrounding structures.

Performed in-house, the scanning process is very simple and shows fantastic 3D images that show bone, airway, and soft tissue in these areas, as well as any dental work you may have.

The entire procedure only takes a couple of minutes giving our dental team crystal clear images of your entire mouth, jaw, nasal, and throat areas. so that they can adequately check for and diagnose any oral health issues.

Are Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Systems (CBCT) Safe

Yes they are safe, whilst CBCT scans use radiation, they use much less than the CT scans you are used to. So while they do use radiation, they are very safe.

Benefits of CBCT scan

Some of the key ways in which CBCT technology is much better than traditional CT scanners includes:

  • Improved experience with the ability to clearly see what your dentist can see
  • Faster scans
  • Less radiation exposure than other types of CT scans
  • Improved diagnostic ability by enabling clinicians to see more of your oral cavity
  • More precise reconstructive and cosmetic dentistry planning
  • No radiation remains in a patient’s body after a CT exam.
  • Non-invasive and accurate.
  • Ability to image bone and soft tissue at the same time
Dental Crown Brisbane Options

What is CBCT scan good for detecting ?

Your dentist may recommend a CBCT scan for several reasons. Your dentist will be able to have much-needed detailed information about your oral situation.

From being used as part of the planning step for your dental treatment. The CBCT scan can include images of:

  • Bone loss
  • Tooth decay
  • Nerves
  • Soft tissue
  • Facial fractures or abnormal growths
  • Infections
  • Tooth root issues
  • Signs of TMJ or other problems with the jaw
  • Evaluate multiple options for impacted teeth.
  • Provide precise services for dental implant placements.
  • Provide bone and tissue evaluation (including sinuses, nasal cavities, nerves and jaw).
  • Detecting fractures, potential tumours and cyst.

Potential problems could be addressed beforehand or avoided altogether for treatments such as dental implants. For some patients dental implant may even be determined as unsafe and not performed at all due to the information that was safely gathered through a CBCT scan
