Explaining TMJ disorders

Are you confused about what a TMJ disorder is?

If you answered yes, then you have that in common with many of our patients. Most people do not know what TMJ disorder (TMD) is, even if they are suffering the symptoms.

The truth is that the symptoms of a TMJ disorder can affect the whole body, which can make it harder to realise the problem could all be coming from your jaw.

So what exactly is TMD?

TMD (Temporomandibular Disorder) is a common but serious condition in which the joint that connects the upper and lower jaws becomes misaligned, causing problems ranging from tooth grinding to jaw and neck pain, as well as migraines and headaches.

What are some of the TMJ disorder symptoms?

A TMJ disorder can cause a very wide range of symptoms, from mild to serious, including:

  • Clicking, grinding and popping of the jaw
  • Difficulty moving the jaw, including opening and closing the mouth
  • Migraines, Headaches and neck aches
  • Locking or soreness or other pain around the face and jaw
  • Sensitivity in the teeth
  • Worn down teeth

How does Excellence in Dentistry treat TMJ dysfunctions?

There are a number of different steps our dental team will take in order to treat TMJ dysfunction.

We will tailor your treatment plan to suit your particular needs. Some steps involved in our treatment plan include:

  • Assessment
  • Treatment planning and goal setting
  • Damage control
